Australia and Ukraine have signed a bilateral security agreement aimed at strengthening long-term defence and security cooperation between the two countries.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the agreement on September 23, 2026, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The agreement establishes a long-term framework for cooperation across defence, security and other areas of mutual interest. It includes collaboration on military capabilities, defence industry, cybersecurity, maritime security and support for Ukraine’s recovery.

As part of the announcement, Australia also unveiled an additional A$60 million support package for Ukraine. The package includes A$45 million in Australian Defence Force equipment, A$10 million for Ukraine’s Energy Support Fund and A$5 million in humanitarian assistance.

According to the Australian government, the new funding brings Australia’s total support for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion to almost A$1.9 billion.

Australia will also join the Maritime Capability Coalition for Ukraine, a UK- and Norway-led initiative focused on strengthening Ukraine’s maritime capabilities.

The bilateral agreement is intended to provide a longer-term basis for Australia and Ukraine to work together on security and defence matters. It also provides for cooperation relating to sanctions, border security, accountability and Ukraine’s future reconstruction.

The agreement comes as Ukraine continues to seek long-term international security partnerships and support amid Russia’s ongoing war against the country. For Australia, the agreement provides a formal framework for continued engagement with Ukraine while creating opportunities for greater cooperation in defence technology and industry.
