More than 167,000 pounds of meat products have been recalled nationwide after federal officials determined that the products were produced without federal inspection and carried a false USDA inspection mark.

The recall involves approximately 167,639 pounds of raw beef, pork and goat products distributed across the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the products were associated with Star Meat Delivery Inc. of Lucama, North Carolina.

The affected meat was distributed to A&D Foods in Georgia and subsequently supplied to restaurants and retailers in multiple states.

Why the meat was recalled

According to FSIS, the products were produced without the required federal inspection and were labeled with the establishment number “EST. 1363.”

The establishment number is significant because the facility does not have a federal grant of inspection associated with that number. As a result, the meat cannot be considered federally inspected.

FSIS classified the action as a Class I recall, indicating that the agency considers the situation to pose a reasonable probability that consuming the affected products could cause serious adverse health consequences.

The agency said there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or injuries associated with the recalled products at the time of the recall announcement.

What products are affected?

The recall includes a variety of raw beef, pork and goat products. Among the affected items are ground pork, pork chorizo, pork chops, pork ribs, beef ribs, beef oxtail, beef short ribs, goat cuts and other meat products.

Some products were sold in bulk and may have been repackaged or relabeled by retailers, meaning consumers may not see the original packaging or establishment information on the product they purchased.

Because of that, consumers should not rely solely on the name appearing on a retail package when determining whether meat may be affected.

What consumers should do

Consumers who believe they have purchased meat covered by the recall should not eat it.

FSIS advises consumers to discard the affected products or return them to the place of purchase. Restaurants and retailers should also not sell, serve or use the recalled meat.

Anyone who has questions about a specific product should check the recall information provided by FSIS and compare the product details, packaging and establishment information with the items they have purchased.

The recall is nationwide and applies to products distributed through retailers and food-service businesses.

Consumers who have recalled meat in their refrigerator or freezer should handle it carefully and avoid consuming it.
