Thailand has unveiled its first national semiconductor strategy, setting a long-term target of attracting around $80 billion in investment by 2050 as the country seeks to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor and advanced electronics industry.

The strategy, announced on September 24, 2026, outlines a long-term roadmap to develop Thailand’s semiconductor capabilities, expand investment and build a more comprehensive domestic supply chain.

Under the plan, Thailand aims to attract approximately 2.5 trillion baht ($80 billion) in semiconductor-related investment by 2050. The government also targets the creation and development of more than 230,000 skilled workers and aims to build an industry capable of generating around $150 billion in annual revenue over the long term.

Thailand’s semiconductor strategy is focused on developing capabilities across the industry, including chip design, manufacturing, assembly, testing and advanced packaging. The government intends to build on the country’s existing electronics manufacturing base while encouraging greater investment in higher-value semiconductor activities.

Thailand targets semiconductor supply chain expansion

The roadmap is expected to be implemented in stages. In the initial phase, Thailand plans to strengthen its existing semiconductor assembly and testing capabilities while developing advanced packaging and preparing for greater wafer manufacturing activity.

The longer-term objectives include attracting investment in chip design and wafer fabrication, as well as expanding research, development and supporting industries. By 2050, the government aims to establish a more integrated semiconductor ecosystem covering multiple stages of the supply chain.

The strategy places particular attention on areas such as power semiconductors, sensors and photonics, which are relevant to Thailand’s automotive, electronics, energy and industrial sectors.

Government to support semiconductor investment

Thailand plans to use investment incentives, workforce development, infrastructure improvements, regulatory measures and research and development support to attract semiconductor companies and encourage new investment.

The initiative comes as governments across Asia seek to strengthen domestic semiconductor capabilities and attract investment amid growing demand for chips used in automobiles, artificial intelligence, electronics, energy systems and other industries.

Thailand already has an established electronics manufacturing sector and experience in semiconductor assembly, packaging and testing. The new strategy is intended to expand those capabilities and encourage investment further upstream in the semiconductor value chain.

The $80 billion figure is a long-term investment-attraction target rather than capital that has already been committed. The strategy represents Thailand’s broader effort to develop its semiconductor industry over the coming decades and increase its role in the global chip supply chain.
